If you dad loves to read, the Kindle Colorsoft makes an ideal Father’s Day gift – and it’s down to AU$329 on Amazon

Amazon might have come late to the colour ereader party, and we in Australia waited much longer for it. However, the Kindle Colorsoft isn’t just available to buy today – it’s been discounted by 18% just in time for Father’s Day. It’s the perfect gift for an avid reader, especially one who enjoys comics, picture books or graphic novels, but even book covers can be enjoyed in colour.

When the Colorsoft released Down Under in late July, our resident ereader expert doubted its value at AU$399. However, she still ranks it as one of the best Kindles, and now that it’s available for just AU$329, we at TechRadar think it’s much better value as a colour ereader.

In fact, any of the best ereaders would make great Father’s Day gift ideas, but this deal makes the Colorsoft an especially compelling choice compared to, say, the likes of the Kobo Libra Colour or the Kobo Clara Colour. That’s because, while it shines with comics, it displays black-and-white text very well.

Our reviewer loved reading comics and graphic novels on that display, but one of his favourite things was just looking at the array of beautiful covers sitting in his library.

The Colorsoft’s screen isn’t its only upgrade from other Kindles – perhaps with the exception of the Scribe. The Colorsoft is “the fastest, smoothest ereader” our reviewer had used till date, offering speedy scrolling and zooming (which is especially useful for reading comics) that outdo most competitors. And there was no sign of any ghosting either, something Amazon has also achieved with its non-colour Kindles too.

However, he was aligned with our Aussie expert in questioning its price, saying it “doesn’t feel premium enough for the price” and that it’s “a bit too expensive to say it’s the Kindle for everybody”. This offer, though, makes it a much more accessible device, one that gets you 16GB of internal storage, but note that Aussie readers don’t get Bluetooth support, so there’s no way to listen to Audible audiobooks via the tablet. You can, however, access the full Kindle Store, or use your Prime Reading or Kindle Unlimited subscriptions on it.

If the Colorsoft is still a touch out of your budget, Amazon is also offering AU$50 off the Kindle Paperwhite (to AU$249) and Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition (to AU$279) – the latter adds more storage, wireless charging and an adaptive frontlight.

Alternatively there’s the aforementioned Kobo Clara Colour, which is a 6-inch competitor using the same display technology. And the good news is, right now, you can save a small amount on it too.
