The Online Safety Act isn’t just about age verification – end-to-end encryption is also at risk


The internet has been imploding since July 25, the day when mandatory age verification finally landed in the UK. Britons are now forced to prove they are over 18 to access adult-only content or view potentially harmful materials on the internet.

Many experts, technologists, politicians, and everyday users have already raised concerns about the negative effects these checks could pose for people’s online privacy, security, free speech, and access to information. Yet, age verification is only one part of the 300-page-long Online Safety Act.
