Warning: spoilers for Emily in Paris season 5 ahead.
Goodbye Paris, hello Rome! Emily in Paris season 5 isn’t really living up to its name at all this time with Emily (Lily Collins) making a fresh start in the Italian capital.
Does Emily return to Paris in Emily in Paris season 5?
Indeed she does! Emily and the rest of the Agence Grateau crew head back home at the end of episode 4 after making the decision to close the Rome office.
Emily, Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu), Luc (Bruno Gouery) and Julien (Samuel Arnold) fail to build up a luxury client base in Italy, especially when Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini) reveals that Muratori only partnered with Agence Grateau to try and get greater leverage on their deal with JVMA.
Ouch! With other high-end brands like Fendi and Intimissimi backing out of partnerships, the agency’s existing client base in Paris also begin to leave, feeling discarded and uncared for while the entire team is away.
Accepting that they cannot make their Roman dreams come true, Sylvie makes the decision to shut shop and head home.
Do Emily and Gabriel get back together?
By the end of Emily in Paris season 5, Emily and Gabriel aren’t an item… but there’s definitely potential for them to be if season 6 gets the green light.
After Emily and Marcello split up in episode 10 (more on that below), Gabriel suddenly comes back into the picture. He’s been scarce this season while Emily has been living in Rome, and after she got back to Paris, Agence Grateau client Thomas Hetherington offered him a job after Gabriel catered for their party in episode 5.
Gabriel hands his notice in at the restaurant to work on the brand’s yacht as a seasonal chef. During this time, he only crosses paths with Emily once, briefly stopping over in Paris for a lunch to get his knives back.
In episode 10, Gabriel is given a three-week leave of absence in Greece as his clients head back to their London office. At the same time, Sylvie texts him to say Emily is now single, and to “do with that information as you wish”.
Having asked him for a postcard, the final scene of Emily in Paris season 5 shows Gabriel writing on the back of one asking to meet him in Greece. But will she go?
So is Marcello gone for good?
Not necessarily, but he almost certainly won’t be getting back with Emily. After Marcello decided to leave the family Muratori brand in episode 6, Marcello tries to build a solo brand with Emily and Nico’s (Paul Forman) help. However, he’s plagued by self-doubt, and that doesn’t get any easier when mother Antonia (Anna Galiena) decides to sue her son for trademark infringement.
Emily’s contacts land him a spot at Venice fashion week (when he can’t get into Paris fashion week), and despite the palazzo flooding, his show is a hit. Antonia lifts her lawsuit, and Marcello can’t wait to get back home to Solitano and properly start his design career.
He wants Emily to move there with him, and this is where things start to fall apart. The two already had a temporary split in episode 4 after Marcello’s talks with JVMA were revealed, but this feels different. Emily doesn’t want to give up the life and work she loves for the “quiet” life Marcello is offering, so the two tearfully agree to go their separate ways after the show in Venice.
However, Agence Grateau is a partner in Marcello’s solo brand, as is Nico. This means we likely haven’t seen the last of Marcello on a professional level.
What about Mindy?
If anything, Mindy (Ashley Park) has had a much more interesting romantic life in Emily in Paris season 5. After breaking up with Nico in season 4, she begins an affair with Emily’s ex Alfie (Lucien Laviscount) behind Emily’s back, which finally comes out once they return to Paris after Julien catches them red-handed.
Emily is infuriated that Mindy has lied to her, but that’s not the only problem on Mindy’s plate. Nico returns, having left JVMA in order to try and win her over. Soon enough, the two start dating again, with both Mindy and Alfie claiming they should put the past behind them at different points during the season.
By the time we get to episode 10, Mindy is in the biggest dilemma ever. In Venice, Emily finds an engagement ring in Marcello’s luggage, becoming convinced that he’s going to propose. Instead, he was hiding it for Nico, who proposes to Mindy while the quartet is on a gondola ride.
She accepts, but Alfie calls her around the same time to try and win her back. He’s convinced that the pair has something special between them and wants to try and make things work. When Mindy and Emily return to Paris, they tell Alfie the news when they bump into him. Alfie is distraught, and Mindy doubts whether she’s made the right decision.
Are the rest of Agence Grateau out of trouble?
In short, probably not. Sylvie’s got the biggest drama to deal with, having broken up with Italian boyfriend Giancarlo (Raoul Bova) and asking for a divorce from husband Antoine (William Abadie).
She’s also reeling from the embarrassment of reconnecting with an old friend and accidentally sleeping with her son in the process. To top it all off, Princess Jane (Minnie Driver) has followed the team over from Rome, injecting some much-needed cash into the business at a price – she’s now the co-head of the agency, alongside Sylvie.
Luc has romantic trouble, after courting a woman in Rome behind his French partner’s back. The two accidentally meet over dinner, and Luc rightly gets it in the neck.
Julian has a much quieter season, with his main issue being putting up with Mindy when she temporarily moves out after her fight with Emily.
Season 6 predictions
It’s worth pointing out that Emily in Paris season 6 isn’t confirmed, but there’s certainly enough narrative scope for it to be renewed.
We’re on the precipice of Emily and Gabriel possibly getting back together, so this would be the main storyline to follow through with. Bravo’s absence from season 5 will be noticed by fans, so there will likely be a demand to get him back on screen as much as possible.
Now he’s invited her to join him in Greece, we could see more continental travel if season 6 gets renewed.
Our other main storyline to pick up is Jane’s new role at Agence Grateau. The team could just about stomach her during their time in Rome, but now they’re back on home turf, Jane’s Italian connections are completely useless. Can Sylvie cope sharing her leadership, and will Jane’s injection of cash cause more chaos than good?
Other B-plots to pick up with include Mindy’s engagement to Nico, Marcello’s solo business and Emily’s journey to finally running her own office.
