Wigan and Hull Kingston Rovers face off in the Grand Final for the second year running – and both sides are eyeing a treble. Having failed to win a major trophy in 40 years before this season, Hull KR have now picked up the Challenge Cup and League Leaders’ Shield in quick succession, while the Cherry and Whites stand to become only the fourth team in Super League history to win three titles in a row.
Last year’s final was tight, tense and thoroughly fascinating. Bevan French scored the only try of the game as the Warriors ran out 9-2 winners to secure an unprecedented quadruple. It was Hull KR’s first major final since 1985, and it showed. Mikey Lewis whipping a routine penalty in off the post betrayed the anxiety sweeping the stands and the pitch. Those were the only points Willie Peters’ men were able to conjure.
But this has been some response. The Robins have wrested two titles from Wigan already this season. The Super League Trophy, however, is the crown jewel. It’s faintly ridiculous that Matt Peet’s men might never measure up to the all-conquering Wigan side that hoovered up seven consecutive league titles, eight consecutive Challenge Cups and three World Club Challenges in the 80s and 90s, but victory at Old Trafford would cement their status as one of the all-time great Super League dynasties.
