I’m gutted that Peacock has canceled Poker Face after two seasons, per reports by Deadline.
Poker Face has been a huge success for Rian Johnson. It received six Emmy nominations and one win, and quickly became my favorite Natasha Lyonne series after Netflix’s Russian Doll.
They said: “We’ve been germinating this next move together since writing the season 2 finale.
“We love our Poker Face, and this is the perfect way to keep it rolling. Give us a beat, and we may just see Charlie Cale again down that open highway.”
It seems Johnson doesn’t want to stop at Dinklage either, with Deadline reporting: “Long term, Johnson’s hope is for the franchise to evolve with a new actor to play the lead character every two years.”
I’m uncertain about Poker Face’s future
I loved the first two seasons of Poker Face, but I’m worried if a brand new cast would be as good as the original. We’ve seen Rian Johnson change his cast a lot with the likes of Knives Out, and he recently admitted he knew the perfect follow-up to Wake Up Dead Man, where the line-up will likely change all over again.
But I’m concerned Poker Face isn’t going to work without Lyonne’s brilliant performance. Part of me wonders if they should make a brand new character instead of trying to reinvent a new one.
So far, we don’t know if the new version of Poker Face will go ahead, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens. I’m unconvinced it’ll be as good, though, after falling in love with Lyonne’s portrayal of Charlie, so while I’m sad Poker Face has been canceled, I also feel very apprehensive about a revival series.
As ever, I’m happy to eat my words, but I don’t think this is the right move for the Peacock series, and I would’ve liked to see season three instead.
