- Apple Music could soon offer lyric sharing direct to your WhatsApp status
- This would match a Spotify feature launched earlier this year
- The new feature could launch with iOS 26.2
Apple is reportedly working on a new feature for Apple Music which would allow users to share songs and lyrics to their WhatsApp status, matching a Spotify feature released earlier this year.
This new integration would allow users to directly share songs or a few lines of lyrics from Apple Music to WhatsApp directly, using custom cards and links back to Apple Music.
Currently, users can share Apple Music links to their WhatsApp status, but there’s no option to share lyrics and customization options are scarce. This update aims to remedy this while providing parity with Spotify.
For reference, WhatsApp Status is a social media-style content carousel a la Instagram Stories, which sits alongside the text string long-time users may be familiar with.
The new feature is currently available through Apple’s developer beta, and depending on the company’s update schedule could feasibly launch with iOS 26.2. After all, Apple Music was a target for new features in the recent iOS 26.1 update.
And as 9to5Mac reports, there’s still at least one issue to iron out. The share icon can simply refuse to show up when trying to share a song, rather than its lyrics, but this is likely to be fixed by release.
All said, this is another step in WhatsApp’s journey from messenger app to social platform – but more importantly, it’s a sign that Apple is still keenly chasing Spotify’s example as we approach the all-important Spotify Wrapped season.
Spotify is well ahead Apple Music when it comes to the size of its userbase, with 713 million users compared to Apple’s 95 million.
Apple Music has made several solid plays to get ahead of its Swedish rival, such as offering lossless and spatial audio all the way back in 2021 (Spotify got lossless fidelity this year, and still lacks spatial audio), but has struggled to match Spotify’s cultural cache, especially when it comes to that key ‘OK, now share it!’ social aspect of music.
Indeed, despite Apple Music’s Replay walking all over Spotify Wrapped last year, music fans and online commentators alike still look forward to Spotify’s data-driven listening recap as the year draws to a close. Incidentally, Spotify has just launched daily recaps and a weekly Wrapped offering, so it’ll be interesting to see who wins that battle this year.
While adding direct sharing to WhatsApp statuses might seem like a small upgrade to some, feature parity puts Apple Music in a better position as the spotlight shifts towards Spotify’s end-of-year antics.
